Many women cut off their permed hair to get in touch with their God-given roots. While this is liberating, it can be scary and overwhelming once your hair is gone. Here are a few of our favorite tips on maintaining your big chop without frustration and regret.

1. Co-wash weekly.

Co-washing is simply washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. Shampoos often contain sulfates and other harmful active ingredients that will strip your hair of it’s natural oils. Using a great conditioner in place of a shampoo once a week will help keep your hair clean, soft, and manageable. Liberally apply your favorite conditioner and gently scrub your scalp. Rinse and allow your hair to air dry. Use a neck towel to catch water.

2. Moisturize often.

Apply a grape-sized amount of your favorite moisturizer in your hair while damp. This will help lock and seal the moisture in your hair for days on end. Doing this after a fresh co-wash will further soften and detangle your kinky hair. You may also rotate between using your favorite moisturizer and a natural oil, like olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil – three products that can be found in your pantry!

3. Comb and brush less.

Using these tools while your hair is wet is less harmful. However, using them too often may cause shedding and breakage. When you can, use your fingers to separate your hair sections instead of a comb. This is much easier on your scalp and will prevent the loss of many combs!

4. Protect your hair at night.

The absolute best thing that you can do for your hair is protect it at night. Make sure that your hair is securely covered with a charmeuse satin bonnet – like our Tranquility bonnet.  If bonnets aren’t your thing, sleep with your hair loose on a satin pillowcase, like our very affordable Ginger pillowcase. Making small changes like this will help retain your hair’s natural oils and moisture and promote hair growth, all while keeping it in place for an amazing style the next day.
