We love featuring naturals who love their hair as well as quick and easy routines. Thankfully, Gwen Hodrick fits that bill and then some. In this week’s Flor Bella hair feature, she shares her favorite products, how she maintains her hair, and great advice for newly natural women. Check it out and share with your friends.
Name and where are you from?
My name is Gwen and I am from Dallas, TX.
When Did you go Natural?
I went natural because I wanted to experience what my hair would be like without the relaxer.
Did you transition or did you big chop? Why?
I did a small chop. My hair was already short so I just let my natural pattern of hair grow from there, after I was done rocking a 2″ tapered (relaxed) cut. It was a conscious decision to begin my natural journey at that time, so that I would not have to endure a long transition phase or big chop.
What prompted you to go natural?
I have had chemicals on my hair since I was a young girl, and I wanted to connect with who I am without any false pretenses.
How did your spouse react to you going natural?
He did not mind because I keep my hair groomed no matter what style or length it is. His motto was “as long as it looks good!”
What is your favorite thing about being natural?
I love the freedom to change my style from curly to straight to whatever style I like.
What is your least favorite thing about being natural?
Humidity when I want to rock a nice twist out! Also, my hair takes a long time to dry, so if I want a twist out, it’s a two-day process.
Did you experience any negativity regarding your decision to go natural?
Yes, I did. This is my second time natural (I cut it after 3 years the first time), and when I first did it, people were asking me all the time if something was wrong or if I was going thru a mid-life crisis. I kindly told them “No”. It’s just a personal journey.
What is your nighttime routine?
Spray a little water or oil on my hair, twist into chunky 2-strand twists, and put on my satin cap. Then, bedtime!
What advice can you give to anyone considering going natural?
The advice I give all the time is: figure out what works best for your hair and your lifestyle. There’s a ton of products and style out there, but be wise when figuring out what works best for you. For me, less products means better outcome 🙂 Take your time, be yourself, and be confident that you have made the right decision for yourself, not for others!
Who are your favorite natural hair bloggers/vloggers?
KinkyCurlyCoilyMe, Camille Rose Naturals, Naptural85, and Bronzegoddess01.
What is your regimen?
Co-wash 2x per month, with one clarifying shampoo every 4-6 weeks followed by a deep condition for 3 hours. I use Shea Moisture products cause they work the best for me, Blue Magic (yes girl!), Olive Oil Eco styler gel, and Organic Coconut oil for twisting and styling. That’s it!
What are your favorite products?
Shea Moisture, Blue Magic, Olive Oil Eco Styler Gel, and Organic Coconut Oil.
What is your go to hair style?
Twist out or puff positioned at the very top of the crown of my head.
Who is your celebrity hair crush?
Tracey Ellis Ross.
Who is your regular hair crush?
@Naptural85.
