We decided to bring back our natural hair features. Kicking off 2015 is the beautiful Mimi Irvin, also known as Corporate Chic. In this interview, she’ll be sharing her favorite products, hair crushes and how she maintains her fierce mane. Read on for more information.
Give us your name and where you’re from.
My name is Mimi Irvin “aka” Corporate Chic. I am a wife; mother of two handsome boys; daughter; friend and have been told a fashionista. I was born in Yokosuka, Japan and come from a military background. My day job consists of a career as a Project Engineer working in Corporate America with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
When did you go Natural? What prompted you to go natural?
I contemplated the idea of going natural in early 2011 and although I loved the relaxed looked and didn’t suffer from breakage, I wanted something different. I was set forth to go on assignment in the Netherlands with my company in January 2012, so I decided December 2011 would be my last relaxer. I wouldn’t have to worry about the Texas humidity and I felt the transition would be easier to deal with in cooler temperatures. As I tried many styles as I could during my transition, 8 months would be the end of that road. I decided to do my BC August 2012. As I sat in the mirror cutting each section it was very hard to get through. I had about 3 inches of new growth but after completing that hard effort, I looked in the mirror and said yes this is ME and I will ROCK it.
What is your favorite thing about being natural?
I love the versatility, it’s AMAZING. I honestly haven’t faced any challenges from outsiders. The only challenge is from me, especially on when I don’t feel like doing it!
What is your night time routine?
If my hair is not twisted, I typically I will pin it up at night and sleep in satin bonnet. In the mornings I will spritz with water, add Coconut oil or shea butter and style in an up-do or wear loose.
What is your regimen?
Currently, I am using the Cantu Natural Hair Collection. Those products are the Sulfate-free cleansing cream shampoo; the sulfate-free hydrating cream conditioner; the deep treatment masque conditioner; coconut milk shine and hold mist; and the coconut curling cream. I am very pleased with the response from my hair. It’s well moisturized and soft.
Other products that I use from time to time are Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La Defining Custard; Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner; and Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque.
Who are your favorite Bloggers/vloggers
Some of my favorites are:
@Naptural85 / @eclark / @jdwinters / @etcblogmag – These ladies are so genuine at heart and I have being able to meet them which was icing on the cake. There are many others (too many to list) that inspire me that I follow and love! Also, being the lover of fashion I had to acknowledge my favorite Fashion Blogger: Style Pantry; she was the very first Fashion Blogger that followed. I absolutely love her!
Who is your celebrity hair crush?
I love Diana Ross, Solange, and Tracee Ellis Ross. Their boldness, fullness and uniqueness are what have drawn them to me.
Who is your regular hair crush?
Being in the natural community, there are multitudes of textures, colors and styles. It’s very hard to name just one!
Any big plans for 2015?
I have a couple of fun things in store, but one is my updated website will be released this month and I am very excited about that. Be on the look out!!
