Hair Feature — Shaunda Johnson
Brooklyn born naturalista Shaunda Johnson looks within (or in the mirror) for natural hair inspiration. In her feature, she talks about transitioning, properly researching hair care products and tools she uses to achieve top notch wash-n-go’s every week. Give Shaunda some love in her feature below.
What is your name and where are you from? Shaunda Johnson and I am from Brooklyn, NY.
When did you go Natural? Did you transition or did you big chop? I went natural February 2014. I transitioned until September 2015 and cut all the permed off hair.
What prompted you to go natural? I decide to go natural because I wanted to try a different look and wanted healthier hair.
What is your favorite thing about being natural? My favorite thing about being natural is that I can do so much with my hair. I can make a bad hair day into a beauty hair day.
What is your least favorite thing about being natural? I don’t have a least favorite thing about being natural. I have researched and learned what products work for me so I love it.
Did you receive any criticism regarding going natural? No.
What is your routine? (To include nighttime regimen): I do a wash and go at less twice a week. In between wash and goes, this is my routine: Every morning I spray my hair with water and leave in conditioner, then I apply a hair milk and last I seal it with an oil. At night I sleep with a silk pillow case. Sometimes I sleep with a silk scarf. On the weekend I do my deep conditioner treatments because I have more time to play around with my hair.

Has your journey inspired your friends or family to go natural? If so, How? A lot of my family and friends are natural and ask me for advice regarding what they should use. Everyone knows that I am always researching how to manage natural hair.
How has being natural shaped your self-esteem? Being natural has allowed me to live outside the box and love who I am.
How do you respond when strangers ask to touch your hair? Many people don’t ask to touch my hair. I normally just get, “How did you get your curls?”
Knowing what you know now, is there anything about being natural that you wished you’d know before you started your journey? In the beginning, I didn’t know how to care for my hair, but once I started researching about natural hair I learned how to take care of my hair and love the texture.
Who are your favorite Bloggers/vloggers? I do not have any favorite bloggers. I do follow many, though, and use information from all.
What are your favorite products? Kinky Curl Knot Today Conditioner, all of Mielle Organics products, Shea Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Coconut Oil.
Your go to hair style is____? Wash and go.
Who are you hair crushes? Myself!
