What is your name and where are you from?
Yolanda Thomas
When did you go Natural? Did you transition or did you big chop?
January 2013
What prompted you to go natural?
My cousin shared her journey with me, and her hair looked so healthy. I thought about it for a couple of months, then I figured why not try it. Best decision I could have ever made.
What is your favorite thing about being natural?
The versatility my natural hair (Darby) has. It’s everything, and more. Growing up I always ran from my curls, now I embrace them. I now listen to Darby and what she wants.
What is your least favorite thing about being natural?
Not so much about being natural, more about trying out hairstyles I see on YouTube and it usually turns into an epic fail. The thing about that is, I don’t give up so easy.
Did you receive any criticism regarding going natural?
Initially, I did only because I cut all my hair off. My family is real big on long hair, and they didn’t understand my choice. I realize I had to do this for myself and not others.
What is your routine?
(To include nighttime regimen): Daily routine would depend on the style I’m wearing. However I do follow the LOC method. At night I generally add a little coconut oil, and leave in conditioner. Like to keep my hair moisturizer.
Has your journey inspired your friends or family to go natural? If so, How?
Yes, my sister and best friend decided to embrace their natural. They kept hearing me go on and on how much I loved my natural, and how healthy my hair was since giving up the white stuff.
How has being natural shaped your self-esteem?
Well let’s just say, I never had self-esteem issues. Now my self-esteem is through the roof. I have a level of confidence I never thought could exist. The way I walk in a room, I know everyone’s staring at my hair.
How do you respond when strangers ask to touch your hair?
I don’t generally have a problem with it. Touch once and get it over with.
Knowing what you know now, is there anything about being natural that you wished you’d know before you started your journey?
How embracing what God created can change you in ways you couldn’t imagine.
